KMC to agument potable water capacity

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will increase its drinking water supply capacity to 210 million gallon per day in the next two years from 180 million gallons now.
"When we took over the capacity was 37 million gallons a day. But now it has gone up to 180 million gallon, which it will be increased to 210 million gallons a day in next two years," KMC Mayor and Fire Services Minister Sovon Chatterjee said here today on the sidelines of CII organised Climate Conclave 2016.
He said KMC was working towards providing 24-hour water supply at Joka and Behalareas a and for that an approval of around Rs 400 crore assistance was received from Asian Development Bank.
The project was undertaken in sync with the civic body's plan to make Kolkata a tube-well free city in two-three years and remove the spectre of arsenic contamination.
The Department of Environment in West Bengal, which has set up a Climate Change Cell, is taking a range of initiatives to promote environment-friendly initiatives across the state, he said.
"We plan to incorporate further training programmes on GHG foot printing, sustainable water and waste management, energy efficiency and green logistics, Chatterjee said.
The other green initiatives taken by the state environment department include a comprehensive policy on co-generation and generation of electricity from renewable energy and establishment of a National Green Tribunal (NGT) bench.
