Knitwear exporters body hails proposed CEPA with Canada

The Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) today hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement that India would implement a road map to conclude Comprehensive Economic Partnershp Agreement (CEPA) with Canada by coming September.
After having CEPA, India could compete with countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Cambodia effectively and increase its share in the textiles market, TEA President A Sakthivel said in a statement.
India's competing countries like Bangladesh and Cambodia were entitled to the least developed countries tariff treatment, while Pakistan and Vietnam also continue to get benefit under General Preference Tariff even after January 1, 2015, he said.
Total knitwear garments exports from India to Canada were worth Rs 680 crore in 2013-14. Canada stood 11th in knitwear exports ranking which had been witnessed in the first ten months of last financial year (2014-15), he said.
Sakthivel, who is in Canada as part of a trade delegation accompanying the Prime Minister, also said an MoU was signed between Apparel Made ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council and Fanshawe College, Ontario, Canada, that would hepl impart training Indian trainers in modern quality methods.
