Kolkata celebrate World Earth Day with trees

People in the city today showed support for environmental protection as they celebrated the World Earth Day by planting trees and organisisng a number of other awareness programmes on combating climate change.
In Salt Lake area, a group of citizens got together to donate and plant 1,000 trees at the IT hub of Sector V.
40-year-old taxi driver Dhananjay Chakraborty's yellow-coloured Ambassador cab 'Sobuj Rath' (Green Chariot) was the special attraction in the campaign as it was fitted with a bed of real grass on the rooftop and a cluster of potted plants inside.
The Indian Museum put up an exhibition on bio-perspective plants of India and also organised a bonsai making workshop.
To spread awareness on trees, a puppet show was also organised at the museum.
Science City celebrated the occasion based on the theme 'Trees for the Earth' for around 250 underprivileged city children.
"On World Earth Day we want to instill awareness among the kids to plant as many trees in and around our surroundings to make our planet greener and help in combating climate change," Science City director Arijit Dutta Choudhury said.
