The annual firecrackers fair will be shifted to a new venue this year, with the organisers failing to get a go-ahead from the Army to hold the event at its traditional site, the Kolkata Maidan.

The Army is the custodian of Maidan, a large open ground in the heart of the city.

The fair, exhibiting an array of firecrackers, is usually held prior to the Kali Puja and Diwali festivities.

It will begin from November 3 this year, instead of November 1, as the organisers - the Burrabazar Fireworks Dealers' Association - claimed to have not received the consent letter from the Army till Monday evening.

"We have been given the nod by police and other agencies to hold the fair at Vivekananda Park in Southern Avenue," the association secretary Chittaranjan Maity said on Tuesday.

The Kali Puja and Diwali is slated on November 6 and 7, respectively.

"It will take more time to set up stalls and meet the safety regulations at the new place," another official of the association said.

An Army spokesperson said it had nothing to comment on the matter.

The firecrackers fair or 'Bazi Bazaar' started at Maidan in 1995 and was being held there since then.

Only 44 stalls had come up in the fair last year, down from the number of around 150 a couple of years back, Maity said, adding, each stall recorded a daily business of Rs 5-6 lakh in 2017.

Two other fireworks fairs at Tallah in north Kolkata and Behala in the city's southern fringe would be open from November 1.
