Kolkata mourns Delhi rape victim's death

Students and young people took out a number of processions in metropolis demanding death penalty for the six accused in the case.

Women protestors of all ages held posters and placards calling on women to fight patriarchy unitedly.

"We mourn her death, we will fight patriarchy", "Break the chain of patriarchy" and "women, unchain your voices" - read the placards.

College Square in central Kolkata, where a number of colleges and the Calcutta and Presidency universities are located, became the hub of anti-rape protests as different student groups took out rallies through the day.

"The state and central governments must take immediate and effective measures to stop the spurt in cases of rape and violence against women," demanded college student Anamitra Mukherjee.

In the evening hours, a group students from different unions and besides members of NGOs observed a candlelight vigil at Esplanade, in the heart of the city.

"It is very sad. She was fighting to stay alive. It is very frightful thought for every other girl," said the Park Street rape victim.

Social activist and Magsaysay award winner Mahasweta Devi said it is a day of national mourning.

"We should hang our heads in shame over what has happened," she said.
