KoPT sees sharp jump in container cargo traffic

Kolkata Dock System (KDS) of Kolkata Port Trust has achieved sharp jump in container handling and recorded an all time high monthly handling of 50092 TeUs (Twenty Feet Equivalent Units) in September 2014.
The port in a statement said this surpassed the previous highest monthly handling of 44873 TEUs achieved in August 2014.
KoPT chairman RPS Kahlon stated that during the first six months of the current financial year (April to September 2014) Kolkata Dock System of KoPT recorded a growth of 7.93 per cent in container handling compared to the same period of last fiscal and continued to hold third position among major Ports.
Commodities, which contributed to the growth in container traffic at KDS, are rise in import of peas, metal scrap, raw asbestos, resins, electronic goods, machineries, chemicals and increased export of Jute & Jute products, CI goods, aluminium products, steel, ferrochrome among others.
