Kovai surgeon gets BC Roy Award

City-based eminent laparoscopic surgeon Dr C Palanivelu, a recipient of Dr B C Roy National Award for the second time, today said his responsibility has increased manifold in view of the honour.
The award under the "Eminent Medical Person" category for 2015 was presented to Palanivelu yesterday by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in New Delhi.
This is the second B C Roy National award for Palanivelu, Chairman of the Gem Hospital, the first being in 2005 under specialty development category for laparoscopic surgery.
He was among the first to introduce laparoscopic surgery in South India in 2001 and instrumental for developing it into a speciality.

Palanivelu told reporters here that his 'dedication and commitment' toward the medical field had increased multi-fold after receiving the award.
He would continue to serve the poor and provide free of cost surgery to the really needy persons, Palanivelu added.
