Political leaders and social activists addressed meetings held in various parts of the state today under the aegis of cultural forums and called upon the people to pledge themselves to the lofty ideals for which the Mahatma stood and sacrificed his life.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee launched "Gandhi Gramam" scheme, aimed at the all-round development and welfare of scheduled caste families in the state to bring them to the mainstream of society.
In the initial phase, 14 scheduled caste colonies selected from 14 districts of the state would be included in the programme, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said, inaugurating the programme at Kunnathukad scheduled caste colony in Mala constituency in Thrissur district.
A detailed socio-economic survey would be conducted in the colonies to understand the requirements of the scheduled caste people. The scheme would ensure that the benefits of welfare programmes of the Centre and states reached them, he said.
A document on the needs of people belonging to scheduled castes would be prepared and submitted to the government with suggestions to chalk out specific programmes for the communities.
