Kudankulam among safest N-plants in the world: Rosatom
Press Trust of India New Delhi Terming the Kudankulam nuclear plant the safest of its kind in the world, Rosatom today said the facility featured additional safety measures to withstand scenarios like the one witnessed at Japan's Fukushima-1 reactor after it was hit by a tsunami in 2011.
The plant, which started generating electricity today, is a major milestone in Indo-Russian nuclear cooperation.
Rosatom, or Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation, helped build the reactors for the Kudankulam plant.
Describing the plant as one of the world's most modern and safe ones, Rosatom said, "The plant has been built with additional safety measures keeping in mind (examples) like Japan's tsunami-hit Fukushima-1."
In his speech at the 57th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, AK Sinha, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, had spoken about the lessons learnt from the Fukushima Daiichi accident while calling for enhanced levels of safety for nuclear reactors against beyond-design- basis accident scenarios.
The first of the two Kudankulam nuclear plant units had attained criticality in July. The second unit at the facility is also almost ready for operations, Rosatom said.
