Family members of Kunduli rape survivor today staged a dharna inside SCB Medical College and Hospital protesting against what they called high-handedness of Odisha government in handling the sensitive issue.
Accompanied by members of civil society from Koraput district, including former MP and Congress leader Pradeep Majhi, the rape survivors family demanded to take back their daughter to their home in Koraput district as she was fully cured.
The 15-year-old dalit girl, who was allegedly raped by four security men in their native village on October 10, was admitted here on November 19 after she made an attempt to commit suicide by consuming at least nine iron tablets together.
A team of 11 doctors, drawn from several departments of the hospital, was treating the patient for the last four days. On Thursday, the team, after reviewing the health condition of the patient, declared that she is fully cured.
But claiming that the patient is still ndergoing psychological stress and needs psycho-therapy for at least 10 more days, the hospital authorities shifted the girl to the mental ward of the hospital.
The patient is now fully cured and she is physically fit. But the psychiatrist in the medical board feels that the patient needs psycho-therapy for at least 10 more days to overcome her mental stress, said Dr Sriprasad Mohanty, head of the medical board.
On the other hand, the civil society and the patients family members want to take the girl back to their native village in Koraput district.
If the girl was not raped as claimed by the state government and she is now fully cured, why she is not discharged from the hospital, wondered Majhi and the mother of the minor girl, who is now studying in Class IX.
