A Kuwaiti couple has been held in Sri Lanka for assaulting customs officials while allegedly trying to smuggle in a pet dog at the Bandaranaike International Airport here today, police said.
A woman, 32, and her partner, 29, assaulted five customs officials, including a woman, at the airport on being asked for quarantine formalities related to the canine, they said.
The officials tried to prevent the couple from smuggling in the dog and when they insisted on quarantine formalities the duo tried to escape the airport, the police said.
The accused woman bit a woman customs official. When the other officials responded to the situation, they were also assaulted, the police said.
The officials were taken to a hospital for treatment, they added.
Reports said the couple was being held at a police station near the airport and would appear before a magistrate tomorrow.
