Labour court asks insurance co, contractor to pay Rs 7.88 lakh

A Labour Court here granted compensation of Rs 7.88 lakh to a woman in a 2011 case in which her husband was killed.
In the order delivered recently, Commissioner G G Hulsure directed the contractor and the insurance company - The New India Assurance Company to jointly pay compensation of Rs 7.88 lakh to claimant Phoolkumaridevi Janeshwar (30) and her four children in a 2011 case where her husband, who worked as a carpenter, died while working at the construction site in Dombivali.
Phoolkumaridevi in her claim stated that her husband, who was working at the construction site fell from a height and died on the spot. The accident occurred due to inadequate safety measures at the site, the claimant stated.
The court ordered the insurance company, to which the deceased was insured, to pay Rs 5.24 lakh and Rs 2.63 lakh to the contractor. The court also ordered the contractor to pay an additional of Rs 2 lakh under the Workmen's Compensation Act.
