Lajong beat Wellington Phoenix to take home NE Super Series

Jeremy Brockie who represented New Zealand in the 2010 World Cup opened the goal account for the visitors in the fifth minute of the game.

Newly signed Friday Gbeneme levelled the scoreline for the home favourites when he found the back of the net in the 27th minute.

Just as the cheering crowd began to settle down, Friday beat the New Zealanders and netted his second goal in the 32nd minute to take his team to a lead position in the first half of the game.

Friday made history for himself and for Lajong when he managed to score seven goals in three matches that impressed his coach and the team's fan at home.

In the second half, both teams scored a goal each even as the Phoenix boys had maximum control of the ball.

The visitors levelled the score line in the 64rd minute in a penalty shootout by Paul Ifill.

Lajong on the other hand, got only one opportunity in the 84th minute and Boithang Haokip converted it successfully to seal the day in Lajong's favour.

While both teams displayed good skills throughout the game, the credit goes to the winner of the match.

Later at the post match conference, Wellington coach Ricky Herbert is all praised for Lajong FC.

"They deserves to win... It was a good match and we had a tough game...," Herbert said adding that today's result as it means that they have to pull up their socks as they begin their A-Series season in Australia.

Lajong, on the other hand is preparing for their Federation Cup match as they face tough Goan football club, Dempo FC besides Mumbai FC and Pailan Arrows.
