Congress is planning a massive rally later this month in Haryana's Panipat, about 90 km from the national capital, to celebrate the "victory of farmers" in forcing the Narendra Modi government to "backtrack" on the controversial land bill.
A Congress leader said the rally is likely to be held on September 20 in Panipat. Senior party leader A K Antony today held a meeting in this regard.
The government's decision against re-issuing the land ordinance has boosted the morale of the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar. The party had dubbed the Modi government as 'anti-farmer' and 'pro-corporate'.
Congress sources said the rally, which will be addressed by the top leadership including party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, will project the government's decision as a "victory of farmers".
"The determination shown by Soniaji (and) Rahulji and the Congress finally forced (Prime Minister) Modi to backtrack. Farmers saved from land sharks," Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh had tweeted last week.
