A local civil protection official, Ricardo Maza, told AFP yesterday that the landslide occurred late Monday in the town of Manzanatitla, which is located in a mountainous region prone to such incidents.
Witnesses said at least 14 people were in the two homes when the sand fell. The state government said rescuers were still working in the area.
The rain also caused rivers to overflow, killing another minor who was swept away by the current when he was swimming in the municipality of Tierra Blanca on Monday, said local civil protection director Salvador Cruz Garcia.
