The last rites of a Nigerian national, who died over a month ago in a prison during detention due to prolonged illness, were performed here.
According to the police, John Hussain Baba Punde(57) had died 42 days ago during his detention at Amritsar central jail because of illness.
"The body of Punde, who was a resident of Kano state, North-Western Nigeria, was buried in a graveyard outside the jail which was meant for unclaimed prisoners," Jail Superintendent R K Sharma said today.
His last rites were performed two days ago, he said.
Punde was shifted to Amritsar jail being an internee around 28 weeks ago after completion of his sentence at Chandigarh's Burail jail.
He was facing two cases, his illegitimate stay in India, defying section 14 of the Foreign Act and involvement in drug trafficking under the NDPS Act, Sharma said.
Sharma said that Punde was suffering from Tuberculosis and his treatment was going at government hospital.
His last rites were performed after obtaining clearance from the Nigerian Government, he said.
