Last telegram despatched today

The last telegram of the 163-year old service was despatched today.
"All messages that were booked on July 14 have been despatched today. It is being done with the help of India Post and our staff," BSNL spokesperson Sanjay Kumar Sinha told PTI.
More than 20,000 telegrams are estimated to have been booked on the day the country bid adieu to telegram service with one of the last messages booked being for Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
A telegram was booked for the young Gandhi just before the computer closed at around 11.45 pm on Sunday at Central Telegraph Office (CTO) in Delhi.
The CTO, which was used by East India Company to alert their force in Ambala Cantonment about the Indian Revolt of 1857, at Janpath, Delhi closed with around 2,220 applications.
The applications included 91 phonograms, 1,333 billed through computers, 606 billed manually and 191 forms were collected by people.
This centre closed with revenue collection of around Rs 69,000.
Though it could not be ascertained which was the last message to be despatched, Sinha said that BSNL is working on to collect details. By Monday afternoon around 12,568 telegrams were despatched.
