The memorandum by the Bar Association of the high court sought the governor's intervention to urgently address the problem and "appropriate steps to fill up all vacant posts of judges of this high court as per its sanctioned strength."
"While the sanctioned strength of judges at the Calcutta High Court is 72 there are at present only 31 judges," Bar Association president Uttam Majumdar said.
This number will dwindle to 25 in December after the retirement of some more judges, he said.
A large number of lawyers marched from the high court to the Raj Bhavan, where their representatives submitted the memorandum to governor Tripathi.
