Tamil Nadu unit of All India Lawyers Union today demanded immediate recall of 12 names recommended by the collegium of the Madras High Court for appointment as Additional Judges of the Court, and sought transparent selection process for such constitutional positions.
AILU General Secretary N Muthu Amuthanathan alleged that those in the list did not have mandatory qualifications for the posts.
He said the AILU, at its state committee meeting at Tiruchirappalli today, requested the Centre to entrust the responsibilities of appointment and transfers of judges to an independent entity such as the National Judicial Commission.
"Lack of transparency in the selection process had resulted in people not fully qualified for the post being appointed judges of High Courts," he alleged.
Advocates of the the Madras Bar has been staging a series of agitations against certain names figured in the recommended list, he said, adding a Judge of the court himself had submitted his written objections to the choice of certain names.
