CPI(M)-led LDF Opposition in Kerala today asked the Centre and state governments to take urgent steps to evacuate Keralites stranded in violence-hit Iraq.
In a resolution passed at an LDF meeting, the Front asked the state government to bring the issue before the Ministry of External Affairs with all seriousness.
Talking to reporters, LDF Convener Vaikom Viswam said the state government had not been able to find out the exact number of Keralites living in the trouble-torn areas in Iraq.
CPI-M state Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan in a statement here asked Oommen Chandy government to prevail upon the Centre to make use of all avenues, including the services of the United Nations and aid agencies, for the safe return of Keralities, including nurses struck in the trouble-torn cities of Tikrit.
He suggeted that the state should send a high-level delegation led by a minister to the Centre to convey the state's anxiety over the issue.
