Though Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Thiruvnchoor Radhakrishnan told the House that steps would be taken as per law and that the government was committed to put an end to political murders, LDF members alleged the government was trying to shield Sudhakaran and walked out of the House.

Seeking leave for an adjournment motion on the issue, former Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan (CPI-M) brought to notice the disclosure to the media made by Prashanth Babu, a Congress activist and former driver of Sudhakaran, on the alleged involvement of the MP in three criminal cases including the attack on Jayarajan on April 12, 1995.

Jayarajan, CPI(M) central committee member and sitting MLA from Mattannur in Kannur district, was shot at while he was returning from Chandigarh after attending Party Congress in a train at Ongole in Andhara Pradesh, he said, adding, with Babu's revelations, a fresh FIR should be registered against Sudhakaran.

Replying to the notice for motion, Chandy said a conspiracy case in connection with the attack on Jayarajan was pending against Sudhakaran and trial in the case was about to begin as a stay in the case has been vacated by the Supreme Court.

As per law, it was not possible to register another FIR in a same case and the government would move further by taking all legal aspects into consideration, Chandy said.

However, conceding to opposition demand, the government had changed the head of Special Investigation Team probing the disclosures made by Babu, he said.
