Leaders of Left parties, Cong pay tributes to Surjeet's wife

Leaders of Left parties and Congress today paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Pritam Kaur, who passed away last week due to old age.
The body of Pritam Kaur (93), wife of late Marxist stalwart Harkishan Singh Surjeet, was kept at CPI(M) headquarters here this morning for people to pay their respects.
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, his predecessor Prakash Karat, party Politburo members including Brinda Karat, Suhasini Ali, CITU leader Tapan Sen and CPI national secretary D Raja were among those who paid tributes.
A representative paid homage to her on behalf of Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh.
"She did not hold any position within the party, but she was a mother figure to us. From pre-Independence struggle to subsequent developments till recently, she has seen through virtually a century of people's struggles in our country.
"She's always a source of confidence and solace. Her absence is a big loss to us," Yechury said while paying respects to her.

The body was later taken to Bundala village in Punjab's Jalandhar district, where she will be cremated at 1 PM tomorrow.
Pritam Kaur is survived by two sons, Gurchetan and Paramjeet, and daughter Charanjeet Kaur.
Surjeet, who was the CPI(M) General Secretary from 1992 to 2005, had died on August 1, 2008 at the age of 92.
