Producer Jason Blum has admitted "mistakes" were made while promoting "The Hunt", a film which was recently cancelled by Universal Pictures following a series of mass shootings in the US.

The satirical film, which features Betty Gilpin, Hillary Swank and Emma Roberts, revolves around "globalist elites" killing people for sport.

In an interview with Vulture, the producer said he and the rest of the filmmakers behind the project have reflected on how things progressed.

"I learned a lot of lessons. If I was offered the choice to make the movie again, I would say yes. We definitely made marketing mistakes, and we made plenty of mistakes along the way. So I've learned a lot," Blum, who has backed "Get Out", "Halloween" and "Split", said.

"It might change how I would position movies and how I would consult on the marketing of the movies. But actually the making of the movies? No," he added.

Universal had cancelled the film's release after two recent mass shootings left a total of 31 people dead in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio.

"The Hunt" was scheduled to hit the theatres on September 27.
