Lecturer, who had suffered acid attack from ex-husband, dies

A college teacher, who had suffered injuries after her ex-husband threw acid on her in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, died today at a hospital in Chennai, the police said.
"Following the acid attack she had sustained burn injuries on her face and other body parts and after initial treatment in Chittoor she was shifted to a private hospital in Chennai. The exact cause of death as of now cannot be linked to the burns suffered...She had also developed some health complications," a senior police officer said.
"Only after getting the medical report we will know the exact reason," Tirupati DSP J Srinivasulu told PTI over phone.
Zarina Begum, 38, worked as a lecturer at a Government Degree College. On July 15, Khaja Hussain, her former husband, allegedly threw acid in her face near Kalur crossroads in Chittoor.
The couple had divorced a few years ago.
The attack triggered angry protests by women, social activists, students and political parties. Khaja was arrested on August 7 and is presently in judicial custody.
