Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the state government- accredited journalists, who have worked for more than 10 years, would be eligible for pension after his or her retirement at the age of 60.

"We have almost followed the pension scheme formulated by the previous Left Front government in West Bengal. A journalist would get Rs 1000 as pension per month with effect from May, 1, 2012," he told reporters.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting, the chief minister said.

Sarkar also announced Rs 3 lakh as donation to the Journalists Welfare Fund and assured land for housing for journalists.

"Journalists have to form a society and then we would hand over land to them for creation of a housing complex," he said.
