Left Front observes 'protest-day'

The Left Front today observed a 'protest day' all over West Bengal condemning the police lathicharge on Left activists during an agitation programme in the city yesterday in which several protesters were injured including women and the elderly.
The Kolkata district Left Front, which yesterday had organised the 'March to Lalbazar' programme, today said that they would press attempt to murder charges against the Kolkata police.
It said it would meet the Governor demanding the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner S K Purakayastha.
The Kolkata police yesterday had arrested three Left activists and charged them with attempt to murder.
"We will file a case against the police by charging them with attempt to murder. We will meet West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi very soon and demand the removal of Kolkata police commissioner," a Kolkata district Left Front leader today said.
Several Left activists, including CPI-M central committee member Dipak Dasgupta and some women, were injured when the police lathicharged them during a march to the city police headquarters.

The Left Front organised rallies, protest-marches in the districts.
"The protest day observations were a huge success as people from all walks of life participated in the rallies throughout the state," a senior CPI(M) state secretariat leader said.
The CPI-M politburo in a statement today condemned the brutal lathicharge on peaceful protesters in Kolkata.
"We call upon all units throughout the country to organise protest-actions and express solidarity with the people of West Bengal who are fighting for restoration of democratic rights," the politburo statement said.
