The Left parties held a rally from Moulali to BBD Bag area in central Kolkata, near the regional RBI office, to stage their protest on the first anniversary of demonetisation.
Left Front chairman and CPI(M) politburo member Biman Bose said the BJP government had been making tall claims about demonetisation and it was time the RBI furnished a status report on the country's economy post-November 8, 2016, the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations.
The CPI(M) leader also asserted that the move to ban high-value notes in November last year had crippled the informal sector of our economy, which contributed to over 40 per cent of our GDP and accounts for nearly three-fourths of our employment.
"The country was pushed towards a financial anarchy after demonetisation," Bose added.
