The Left Front has decided to field 71 women candidates in the forthcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, in which it has announced the names of candidates for 125 out of the total of 144 wards.
Releasing the names of candidates, Left Front Chairman Biman Bose told reporters that names of 67 women candidates were there in the first list of candidates released today, and four more names would be declared soon for the April 18 polls.
With 71 women candidates to be fielded, the LF seems to have got one up on Trinamool Congress, as its tally stands five more than those fielded by the ruling party.
Bose also said that the candidates' list featured 23 names from religious minority communities and some new faces.
The Trinamool Congress, which announced the names for all 144 wards on March 8, has fielded 66 women and 21 persons from minority communities.
"We will make a turnaround in the municipal elections and party leaders and workers will have to make all-out effort to achieve that," Bose said.
The Left Front had lost out to the Trinamool Congress in the 2010 elections to the KMC.
