Top leaders like Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat (CPI-M), A B Bardhan, S Sudhakar Reddy (CPI), Debabrata Biswas (Forward Bloc) and Abani Roy (RSP), who participated in the dharna, also decided to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh soon on various aspects of the issue.
Addressing the gathering, Bardhan said September 12 would be observed as the 'Food Security Day' throughout the country, and demonstrations would be organised and FCI godowns picketed in all states.
The veteran Communist leader also said that amendments on crucial issues would be tabled by Left MPs on the Food Security Bill to be tabled by the government in Parliament.
Later, Brinda Karat said the Left parties would ask the government not to export excess foodgrains lying in the FCI godowns and use them to feed the people, suffering from drought.
She also demanded the government take urgent steps to universalise public distribution system, doing away with APL, BPL categorisation and end speculative activities on foodgrains and other essential commodities. The CPI(M) leader also demanded immediate steps to address agrarian distress.
RSP and Forward Bloc leaders asked the people to mobilise in even larger numbers for the September 12 protest programme.
