A strong Left block in the next Lok Sabha would play a key role in the formation of a non- Congress, non-BJP government after the 2014 polls, the CPI said today.
The party would go in for state-specific alliances and seat adjustments in the general elections so as to ensure the emergence of "a strong Left block in the new Lok Sabha that can play key role in the formation of a non-Congress, non-BJP government in the post-poll period", CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy told a press conference here.
The CPI National Council, which concluded a three-day meeting here yesterday, reviewed the preparations for the Lok Sabha polls with its state leaders presenting reports on the political developments in their respective states.
The party leadership also reviewed the situation in the five states going to assembly polls. The CPI has joined hands with Left and secular parties in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and has decided to put up a "limited number" of candidates in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, he said.
The National Council also expressed serious concern over the deteriorating communal situation in various parts of the country, particularly in Hindi heartland, terming it as "an offensive of the right reaction and communal forces to capture power in 2014 by fanning communalism and sharpening communal polarisation," Reddy said, targetting the RSS-VHP for it.
His senior party colleague Atul Kumar Anjaan also demanded deployment of RAF in the strife-hit Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas and sought stringent action against the culprits.

Reddy said the struggle against communalism would be continued by the Left parties joining hands with all secular democratic parties and forces across the country.
The meeting also expressed concern over "the behaviour of former Army Chief V K Singh and his eagerness to join politics soon after relinquishing the office".
The party also "expressed apprehension over some of his activities during his tenure and the bid to mar the apolitical character of Indian Army".
