The government, earlier, had made an attempt to bring in a law but was opposed by the students who feared an increase in fee structure.
Intervening, Congress MLA and former Speaker Ramesh Kumar asked the minister whether a law could be brought in the 4 aftermath of Karnataka High Court declaring as "unconstitutional and invalid" the University Grants Commission (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulation 2010 pertaining to governance system, admission and fee structure and opening of campuses of deemed-to-be universities in the country.
The High Court had delivered the verdict in favour of the deemed universities, which challenged the unconstitutionality and legality of the regulation.
The universities had contended that the regulation interfered with the administration and admission processes of private unaided institutions in gross violation of a series of dicta of the Supreme Court.
