Actor-writer Lena Dunham has revealed that she underwent a hysterectomy to treat her endometriosis.
The 31-year-old actor shared the news of her surgery in the March 2018 edition of Vogue, the excerpts of which were published on the Endometriosis Foundation of America website.
Dunham said she had made the tough decision to undergo the procedure - which involves the removal of the uterus and cervix - after undergoing "years of complex surgeries measuring in the double digits".
She also talked about trying alternative treatments including pelvic floor therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and yoga.
The "Girls" creator said the team of doctors had found other issues with her reproductive organs while they were performing the surgery.
"In addition to endometrial disease, an odd hump-like protrusion and a septum running down the middle, I have retrograde bleeding, a k a my period running in reverse so that my stomach is full of blood.

"My ovary has settled in on the muscles around the sacral nerves in my back that allow us to walk. Let's please not even talk about my uterine lining. The only beautiful detail is that the organ - which is meant to be shaped like a light bulb - was shaped like a heart," Dunham said.
The actor has been hospitalised multiple times in the recent years due to endometriosis.
Last April, she said she was "endometriosis-free" after undergoing surgery to move her ovaries away from her rectal wall.
But following the hysterectomy, few weeks later, Dunham suffered complications from the procedure and was rushed to the hospital after a red carpet appearance at the 2017 Met Gala.
She had to cancel her "Lenny Letter: America IRL" tour due to the same.
