Altogether 17 garden workers including 12 women were on way when two grown up leopards sprang towards them and pounced on five inflicting serious injuries on their shoulders, stomach and back at Latabarry No 19 section, the division bordering Karbi Anglong Hills and Kaziranga National Park (KNP), official sources said.
The women were way back after plucking tea leaves when they were mauled by the carnivores.
The two animals fled as the other 12 workers shouted and chased them away.
The injured were identified as Janaki Hunda (32), Aarti Munda (35), Jaan Sawthal (38), Rupa Gaur (34) and Chakra Sowthal (36).
Bokakhat Forest Range officials later managed to drive the leopards towards the KNP side by firing blank bullets into the air and bursting fire crackers.
