A woman was mauled to death by a leopard near Lansdowne hill station in Uttarakhand's Pauri district, a forest official said today.
Vimala Devi, aged 42, a resident of Bunga Talla village in Pauri division, had gone along with her companions to the forest to collect fodder for her livestock yesterday when the incident happened.
A big cat, hiding behind the bushes, attacked her, Forest Officer (Pauri Division) Rajmani Pande said.
As she was dragged into the forest by the leopard, her companions raised an alarm, he said adding villagers rushed to the scene but could not find her.
After a thorough search, police recovered the woman's body and brought it to a hospital in Pauri for post mortem, Pande said.
The villagers are demanding the leopard be declared a man-eater and forest department personnel deployed to kill it.
