The five-year-old feline yesterday fell into a well located at a field in Ujada village under Vadiya Taluka, Amreli district, forest officer J K Makwana said.
"The team of forest staff from Kankuvav headed by its Range Forest officer M B Malaniya rushed to the site after getting information from the people of the village about a female leopard getting trapped in a 'water room'," he said.
The leopardess might have come chasing a prey there and got trapped inside the 'water room', which was fitted with an electric motor to draw water from the adjoining well, a forest official said.
However, the carnivore tried to escape from a big whole in the water room and fell into the well having water till a depth of about ten feet water and died, he said.
Later, a postmortem of the carcass was performed, Makwana said, adding, a final report of autopsy was awaited to ascertain the exact cause of the animal's death.
