He said that it was not an attack, but a shootout on the police party after security forces launched an operation in the area.
Three militants travelling in a car opened fire on the team at the Zakura crossing on the Srinagar-Ganderbal road, killing sub-inspector Imran Tak and injuring a special police officer (SPO).
"We have information that it is a group of the Lashkar and some of them have been identified," Khan told reporters after paying tributes to Tak here.
"Tak was injured in the shootout and died at the SKIMS. A SPO was also injured, he has a bullet wound on his leg, but he is out of danger," he said.
The officer said that one militant was apprehended at the spot.
"At the time of the shootout, one militant was arrested. He says his name is Touseef and he is from Parimpora, but we will have to verify it. We will go ahead with the investigations," Khan said.
