The government's decision to spruce up the existing menu came after it came to light that it remained the same for long, Jayalalithaa informed the state Assembly.
The menu was tested on an experimental basis in a school each at Chennai and her native constituency Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli and the children seemed to have taken a liking to them, she said.
Culinary experts had offered 13 types of variety rice and four varieties of egg delicacies and government has decided to implement the revised menu in phased manner, she said.
The new menu for school children and their counterparts in anganwadi centres include tomato rice, Bengal gram pulao, curry leaf rice, lemon rice with peppered egg, boiled egg, potato fry and boiled potatoes on different days, she said.
While the scheme will initially start with one block in each district, it will be gradually expanded for the entire district based on its progress, she said.
The nutritious noon-meal scheme was launched by AIADMK government led by the late M G Ramachandran in 1982 to prevent school dropout, increase enrolment and provide nutrition to children.
