Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) will soon be available in Tetra Paks in Uttar Pradesh after the state government today gave its approval, aimed at cutting down smuggling.
The proposal of selling liquor in 180 ml Tetra Paks to effectively check smuggling was taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, an official statement said.
The Tetra Paks will have six protective layers and have shelf life or the dates fit for its consumption clearly mentioned on them along with the exact weight of the liquor and the pack, the statement added.
Before using the Tetra Paks for packing liquor, the manufacturing units will have to take certificates from the Central Food Technology Research Institute, Mysore or ITRC, Lucknow or Indian Institute of Packaging, New Delhi.
Some states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh already allow liquor to be sold in Tetra Paks.
Tetra Paks are commonly used for packaging of non-alcoholic beverages like Frooti and Appy, among others.
