School teachers of Ghusra village in Jharkhand have asked students to teach their illiterate parents and relatives how to read and write as part of their home work.
This is being done to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the tribal-dominated village in East Singhbhum district, Deputy Collector Sanjay Kumar said today.
As a part of the literacy mission launched by the state government, Kumar had held a meeting with villagers on August 7 when they had taken the pledge to turn Ghusra a 100 per cent literate village.
Since then, literate members of the village, including school students, have been teaching at least one member of the village to achieve the target.
Acting Principal of Upgraded Middle School Radha Kumari said the students were being asked to teach their illiterate parents and relatives as home work.
The impact of the initiative is that the elderly people of the village did not hesitate to learn reading and writing from their children and grandchildren, he said.

Besides, the literate daughter-in-law of the family is teaching her illiterate sister- and mother-in-law, while in some cases it is vice-versa, Kumar said.
People are also being taught how to sign instead putting their thumb impression, said the deputy collector.
Kumar said the villagers had taken out a 'literacy rally' on Independence Day.
As per the 2011 Census, the literacy rate was 40.79 per cent in Ghusra village. Of them, 26.49 per cent are women.
