The Tripura Pragatishil Gramin Congress (TPGC), a political party formed with breakaway factions of the opposition congress in 2013 today merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party here.

Bhowmick was the Chief Whip of opposition Congress in the state legislative assembly from 2008 to 2013.
Another Congress leader Arun Kanti Bhowmik, and a former IAS officer Bijoy Debbarma also joined the BJP in a small function organized by BJP here in presence of a central BJP leader Ramlalji, Dasgupta said.
Bhowmick said, "I have joined BJP because the party has an ideology and programmes of serving people. I think it would be the real platform to fight against corruption of ruling CPI-M".
