More than 3000 local people of Jamugurihat today blocked the National Highway near Jiabhorali
Bridge.
Thousands of people this morning blocked the six km stretch of the NH at various places from Jiabhorali to Karsantola demanding that three 'Maujas' (revenue collection areas) of Borbhagia, Chilabandha and Murhadol not be included in the proposed Biswanath district but to remain with Sonitpur district.
People also blocked the road for four hours at Jiabhorali bridge and in Jamuguri, about 10 km from bridge, by burning tyres on the National highway affecting movement of vehicles from both sides of the district, police sources said.
The road was opened from 1 pm after the state government declared through a press release that Sonitpur and Biswanath districts' boundary demarcation will be marked from Dekorai river in deference to people's demand.
As per a government decision Sonitpur district is to be divided into two districts of Sonitpur and Biswanath Chariali.
Today's protest was in the wake of the state government publishing a notification by the Governor on January 25 for administrative expediency to sanction the formation of a New Administrative District to be known as 'Biswanath District' comprising the whole area of Biswanath and Gohpur civil Sub-Division with headquarters at Biswanath Chariali.
