The singer said he had come into his own and found his role in the band by the time they decided to part ways, reported The Guardian.
"In the last year of One Direction I was probably the most confident I ever was. And then it was: 'OK, hiatus!'" Tomlinsion said.
Opening about the talk the British boy group had about the hiatus, he added, "It wasn't necessarily a nice conversation. I could see where it was going."
Tomlinsion, 23, also revealed that he was hesitant to pursue a solo career in the wake of the band's temporary split, instead preferring to focus on managing and wait out the "two years, five years, whatever it be" until the band got back together.
