"A low pressure area has formed near South Andaman and Nicobar Islands and North of Sumatra Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify into a depression in next 24 hours and a deep depression in the subsequent 24 hours", Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S Balachandran told reporters.
In the last 24 hours ending 0830 hours, Sivagiri district in Tamil Nadu received the maximum rainfall of 6 cm while Meenambakkam in Chennai received 3 cm, he said.
Earlier, cyclonic storm Nada, which was expected to bring heavy rains in the state, had weakened into a depression and hit landfall near Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu on December 2.
It had weakened into a well marked low pressure area, moved west north westwards and had brought rains to various parts of the state, heavy in some areas and moderate to light in others.
