At a meeting with senior officials, Khanna instructed Delhi Police to maintain law and order in Subhash Park area, near Red Fort and Jama Masjid, where the remains of a mosque believed to Akbarabadi masjid was found early this month during Metro construction.
Sources said during the meeting, the option of area Sub Divisional Magistrate taking over the area was discussed but it was met with resistance from North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
NDMC officials informed the meeting that the land belonged to the municipal body and they have already taken possession of the land.
The sources said the Lieutenant Governor also told the meeting that till it is proved that the structure is of Mughal era, the structure should be kept covered.
Police have also been asked to keep a tight vigil, sources said.
