Cheques were handed to 52 mediapersons in the presence of Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava, president of UP Accredited Journalist Association Hemant Tiwari and secretary Siddharth Kalhans.

Srivastava said financial assistance was being provided to mediapersons, whose cameras and other equipment were either damaged or went missing during the August 17 violence.

A committee would be constituted to look into the matter, he said.

On August 17, a protest against incidents in Myanmar and Assam turned violent here with protesters indulging in brick batting in parts of the city.

Protesters had created a ruckus forcing business establishments to close down. When the RAF and PAC personnel tried to chase them away, they indulged in heavy brick batting damaging public property and vehicles.

They also damaged vehicles and electronic equipment of mediapersons.
