Free Bird, which is named after the group's 1973 hit, will centre on the 1977 plane crash which cost lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, and three others their lives.
Artimus, who survived the plane crash, has written the script alongside director Jared Cohn and production is slated to begin later this year, reported Rolling Stones.
"When that plane crashed, we were at the top of the world, man," Pyle said.
"I mean, we could play with any band - any band, whether it was the Rolling Stones, anyone, and we would hold our own or better. I think of that accident every day and what we might have accomplished if we'd have 10 more years.
