Replying to a query by Congress member Alka Desai during Question Hour, the minister for urban development Uday Samant said, "it is true that these classrooms have been given to non-educational organisations for their utilisation".
Samant said the government had instructed the civic body to renew the lease agreements of these classrooms, scheduled to expire in March-April 2014.
The BMC had provided the classrooms to NGOs to teach poor children. However, the civic administration has now taken it on itself to improve the classrooms and the overall quality of education in these schools.
To this, the minister said the government would discuss the issue with the BMC and classrooms would be made available to students.
