Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday wrote to the Election Commission demanding relaxation in the model code of conduct, in force since March 10 for the Lok Sabha polls, to undertake drought relief measures.

In his communication to the EC, Fadnavis has cited similar relaxation given in 2009.

The state government has declared drought in 151 tehsils and has allocated financial assistance worth Rs 4,714 crore for mitigation measures, said an official in the chief minister's office (CMO).

"To assess the severity of the situation, there is a need to hold a cabinet meeting of the state government," Fadnavis wrote in his letter.

The Maharashtra CM sought permission for inviting tenders, assessment and finalisation of work orders, including for renovation and supply of medical equipment to rural hospitals and village level works, the official said.

The chief minister has also sought permission from the EC for state ministers to hold meetings in drought affected areas so that relief work can be expedited, the official said.

All four phases of polls to the state's 48 Lok Sabha seats ended April 29.
