Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today presented the Sri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna Dr M S Subbulakshmi Fellowship in music to 50 promising and young artists in Carnatic and Hindustani music (vocal and instrumental) from across the country.
Today was the concluding day of the four-day centenary celebrations of the doyen of Carnatic music- M S Subbulakshmi- at the Shanmukhananda hall here.
The late M.S was associated with the Shanmukhananda Sabha for nearly five decades," an official release said.
The president of the Shanmukhananda Sabha, V Shankar, said "the fellowship provides for an annual grant of Rs 1 lakh per person for 3 years. At the end of the 3rd year, a new lot of young artistes would become eligible for the fellowship."
Fadnavis also honoured violinist R K Shriramkumar and mrudangist K V Prasad, who had played for the legendary vocalist in various concerts.
"Incidentally, Shanmukhananda is the only institution in the country to which the singer had lent her name to be used for the cause of music," Shankar said.
During the four-day festival, the Sabha honoured the daughter of "M.S.", 82-year old Smt Radha Viswanathan, 92-year-old T K Murthy, who accompanied the legendary singer for nearly 55 years by playing mrudangam and 100-year-old Kathakali exponent from Kerala Chemenchery Kunhiraman Nair with "Sri Shanmukhananda Dr M S Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya Special award".
