Congress today objected to Centre's focus on Gujarat's GIFT City on its development as a global financial centre by sidelining Mumbai, and asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take up the matter with the Prime Minister.
"Fadnavis should take an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand reinstating Mumbai as the international finance centre (IFC)," Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam said here.
The proposal to develop Mumbai as an IFC had been conceived by the UPA government, he told reporters.
The Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said in the budget speech that Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) had been envisaged as an International Finance Centre.
He did not mention Mumbai in this respect.
Prior to the budget, however, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha had said at an event in the city that the Centre was "keen to transform Mumbai as a global financial centre".
